Shock Absorber Seals
Seals for the Model A Houdaile shock absorber used during the rebuild process can be procured locally. The part numbers for the gaskets are:
- To fit around the shaft, between the screw-in bushing plate and the cover,
Fabric gasket with taper on one side, use 2 - Volkswagen Beetle push rod tube seal, Robson Auto Centre, 1548 Woodward Dr.
or
Neoprene o-ring, Parker-Seal no.2-316, Schooner Industrial, 87 Bentley Ave.
- To fit between the outer lock ring and the cover - Neoprene o-ring, Parker-Seal no.2-151, Schooner Industrial, 87 Bentley Ave.
After cleaning and de-rusting a shock absorber, the cover to body threads may fit loose. Use some Permatex 2 form-a-gasket sealant on the threads to help seal the cover, and on the threads of the pipe thread plug.
The inner valve stem packing was originally graphite-filled rope. A similar product is available in the plumbing section at the hardware store. The packing is wound around the stem between the 2 flat washers.
If you are unfortunate to break off the adjusting nut on the end of the shaft, weld on a 7/16" square nut for up to 1930, and a 1/2" thin hex nut for 1931 to the top end of the adjustment needle shaft.
